Drawing for an Envelope

For this task we had to work as a group to create instructions for someone to construct a door with any written instructions or shapes. It also had to fit in an A4 envelope. 

This task was extremely difficult as it had to make us think outside of the box and not follow our natural instinct which, in this case, was to create a set of simple instructions to follow.

As a group we decided to recreate the door out of string as, when layed out, we thought it would be the best way for someone to see the basic shapes of the individual parts of the door. 

Overall I think that we were successful at this task as we met the aims of the brief however, I felt that we could have been a bit more imaginative with the ways we used to rope to show different parts of the door as, to someone eles, they wouldn't be able to tell what part of the door is which. This could be done by using thicker rope or plaited rope to show the different elements.

Book Cover Designs - Mark Making 'Spot and Stripes' Contextualisation

The 'Spots and Stripes' brief, for me, was the most enjoyable as I really enjoyed working with limited materials and find ways that they can be used.  For putting the marks I created into context, I decided to create some box cover designs for the title 'We Were Liars' on Photoshop as Graphic design, specifically book cover designs, is a specialism that I am interested in looking at for a University course.  For these designs I took photos of my rubbings and marks made with black acrylic and ink, uploaded them onto Photoshop and used the layer mask tool to build up the image. I then experimented with altering the opacity of the layers to hide and make some parts of the marks transparent which I felt tied in with the title of the book.

'Muddy Hands' Mod Rock Sculpture

For 'Muddy Hands' we were instructed to look bad on our previous work and build on our ideas and make small scale 3D structures inspired by shapes. We had to focus on the quality of the sculpture looking at the texture. Looking back at previous work from the 'Maquette' project, I decided upon a similar approach. I began by making small scale paper structures to help me understand/create the basic shape on my 3D design. From that I made a wire structure. I wanted to create a sculpture that was very fluid and included a lot of linear lines and negative space.  I then proceeded to cover the frame in mod rock. The qualities of mod rock mean that once dry, the texture is very powdery and rough. To try and eliminate the rough texture I layered up the medium to try and create a smooth structure which I thought would lend itself well to my fluid design. Monochromatic Mark Making - 'Spots and Stripes'

Stripes and Spots: I found this brief to be the most enjoyable so far as I really enjoy the freedom that mark making allows. For these marks I used limited materials, just black acrylic paint and Indian ink, and experimented with the mediums to explore all the different ways that they could be used. From using a paint brush, a stick and a pallet knife to apply the medium to the paper.  I am really happy with my final outcome, I feel that I produced a very visually appealing A1 sheet. To develop this project further I want to experiment with printing these marks onto acetate to create a textile surface pattern design that can be printed onto fabric.
